OPERATING ENVIRONMENT IN IN 2019
• Mauritius by by virtue of its its nature as as an an island has a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a limited market delineated by by its its shores With around 114 hotels present in in in in in in the the the the country the the the the hospitality industry is is is rife with competition We have already established ourselves as as leaders in in in in in in in the the the the the Wi-Fi and IPTV segments detaining almost 58% of of those markets However the the the the the number of of of hotels is not likely to to to increase substantially over the the the the short term In response we we continue to to to be be purposeful in in in in in in in our our diversification strategy and focus on on on on on innovating to to to remain at at at at the the forefront of of our our industry • We faced one major challenge in in in in in September 2019
Thomas Cook the the the the oldest tour operator in in in in in the the the the world collapsed creating a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a ripple effect on on the the the the the travel travel and hospitality industries around the the the the the globe Since hotels benefit largely from from travel travel travel agencies’ holiday packages they faced a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a double blow: loss of of revenue from from bookings before Thomas Thomas Cook Cook filed for for for bankruptcy and and cancelations of of of Thomas Thomas Cook Cook travellers between the the the months of of September and and and December—the peak season for for for for tourism in in in Mauritius It was in in in this context that 2 2 2 ICT projects for for which we we we were were shortlisted fell apart and and were were postponed to to 2020 OUTLOOK AND PRIORITIES IN 2020 • Given that that we we operate in in the the the the the the hospitality market one of of of the the the the the the hardest-hit segments by the the the the the the crisis it it it it is is is likely that that we we will feel the the the the the the the impact of of of the the the the the the the global outbreak of of of Covid-19 The uncertainties around the the the the the the the virus have wreaked havoc across the the the the world with certain certain air carriers suspending routes and governments imposing travel restrictions resulting in in in in in in in in in in a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a decrease in in in in in in in in in in tourist arrivals arrivals in in in in in in in in in in Mauritius International visitor arrivals arrivals are expected to to to further decline over over the the the coming months It is is is uncertain how long long Covid-19’s shadow will will loom over over the the the hospitality industry and if its effects will be long-lasting • Amid this growing uncertainty with prolonged travel restrictions from our traditional markets we aim to pursue a a a three-fold strategy in in in 2020:
– Hospitality will will remain a a a a a a a a a a key vertical focus where we will will continue to enhance our our offers particularly for the guest digital experience through our mobile application – We also remain optimistic about our diversification strategy into the local corporate market having won over 14 businesses in in in less than a a a a a a year – Finally we aim to to continue leveraging our our our relationship with our our our technology partners to to further develop our operations in in in the region CURRIMJEE JEEWANJEE AND COMPANY LIMITED
